Advanced X10D Delivers Real-Time Intelligence Across Command Channels

During a multi-day certification exercise in West Virginia, a U.S. Army aviation unit successfully tested Skydio’s advanced sUAS platforms, including the X2D and X10D. As part of the evaluation, Skydio’s drones were responsible for providing comprehensive ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) by streaming, telemetry, and sharing real-time data through external radios. The event not only showcased the autonomous capabilities of Skydio drones but also emphasized their ability to integrate seamlessly with the Tactical Operations Center (TOC) through advanced communications systems.

Challenge: Ensuring Real-Time Situational Awareness at Remote Command Centers

Soldiers were tasked with enhancing security for a Forward Armament and Refueling Point (FARP) during helicopter ingress and egress. These operations previously relied on ground forces to provide drone-based ISR, leaving helicopters vulnerable once ground units deployed. The regiment's leadership needed an organic solution to maintain situational awareness throughout the mission.

This scenario presented a significant challenge since the FARP was located at a remote site, at least four hours away from the TOC. This separation required a robust and reliable method of transmitting live Full Motion Video (FMV), telemetry, and geospatial data to decision-makers in real time. Adding complexity, the operation took place in low-light conditions, highlighting the need for resilient communications infrastructure that could maintain uninterrupted feeds from the drones.

Skydio's Solution: Streaming Video, Telemetry, and External Radio Integration

Skydio’s drones performed remarkably well. The X10D, featuring next-gen onboard AI and a FLIR Boson+ thermal sensor, was especially effective in identifying potential threats and capturing high-quality data, even during nighttime operations.

The drones operated through Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK), a system crucial for integrating video and telemetry into the broader situational awareness framework used by U.S. Special Operations Forces. The drones streamed Full Motion Video and telemetry, ensuring command teams could make informed decisions in real time.

To ensure seamless transmission of live ISR data to both local and remote command centers, the Skydio sUAS provided:

  • Full Motion Video (FMV) Streaming:
We streamed high-resolution video directly to the TOC via TAK. X10D's advanced optical sensors, including a FLIR Boson+ thermal camera, captured detailed imagery during night operations. Skydio's real-time FMV feed, coupled with its 4K day/night cameras, allowed command teams to monitor the FARP perimeter, even in total darkness.
  • Telemetry Integration:
In addition to video, telemetry data was streamed live, providing critical information about the drone’s position, altitude, speed, and other mission parameters. The Skydio controller data link ensured consistent transmission of this telemetry over significant distances. The resulting data was immediately available to the command center; improving situational decision-making for leaders.
  • External Radio Connectivity:
A key part of the exercise was evaluating drone capability to transmit over long distances using external radios. The X2D and X10D streamed FMV and telemetry, enabling the push of ISR data to the TOC in near-real time, overcoming traditional range limitations faced by many other sUAS in rugged or obstructed environments.

Results: Real-Time ISR and Communications Strengthen Operational Capabilities

Skydio’s drones demonstrated their ability to be force multipliers. The exercise showcased their adaptability in complex environments, allowing relatively inexperienced operators to quickly grasp their capabilities.

The exercise validated several key capabilities:

  • Long-Distance, Real-Time ISR:
Skydio drones transmitted high-quality video and telemetry over extended distances, providing critical intelligence from the FARP to command centers located four hours away. The success of these transmissions enabled commanders to make informed decisions based on real-time data, even when operating from a considerable distance.
  • Seamless TAK Integration:
The use of ATAK as a common operational picture proved essential in unifying ISR data streams. The drone feeds allowed both the local operators and remote command staff to synchronize their understanding of the operational environment, ensuring enhanced coordination between air and ground assets.
  • Autonomous Flight and Reduced Cognitive Load:
With their ability to fly autonomously and navigate complex environments without constant operator input, Skydio’s drones reduced the cognitive load on operators. The integration of real-time telemetry and video streaming ensured that operators could focus on mission objectives while the drones handled the data capture autonomously.

A Look Ahead: Scaling Up ISR Capabilities

As units evaluate future sUAS acquisitions, the performance of Skydio drones places them at the forefront of potential solutions. The ability of X10D to function autonomously in high-stakes environments makes the drone a prime candidate for a multitude of operations.
